Alcohol And Neuropathy

Today's article from digitalnewscafe.net (see link below) talks about an underestimated form of neuropathy that is brought about by alcohol abuse. With this form of neuropathy, it is important to treat the cause before treating the symptoms. Therefore, tackling the alcoholism must be the first priority to avoid the nerve damage becoming much worse. After that, hopefully that person can find a way to help his/her neuropathic problems.

Manifestations Of Alcoholic Neuropathy
by Staff on July 31, 2012

Alcohol addiction has numerous effects on individuals which may extend to the physiological, mental and interpersonal aspects of their life. Chronic alcoholism can cause alcoholic neuropathy, which is also known as alcoholic polyneuropathy. When this disorder is not dealt with, it may cause long-term problems like extreme pain, disability and damage to the hands and feet.

Alcoholic neuropathy is a nervous system disease that results from serious alcoholism. This affects body nerves that include hands, feet, muscles, reproduction system and gastrointestinal system. Some specialists in alcohol treatment centers claim that while the specific cause of the disorder is not known, it can be linked to alcohol-related nerve damage, vitamin deficiency and poor diet.

Sensory Nerve Damage
As alcoholic neuropathy leads to neurological damage, it will not enable the body to recognize sensation. This damage often manifests as numbness which can be felt through the legs and arms. The pain in these body parts may also suggests the development of alcoholic neuropathy.

Complications of Alcoholic Neuropathy in Body Organs
Alcoholic neuropathy can harm the autonomic nerves, which are in charge of the performance of the gastrointestinal tract, bladder, heart and other internal organs. According to professionals from alcohol rehabilitation centers, when the nerves that supply an individual’s gastrointestinal tract is damaged, the foods that are consumed may not be properly transferred to the intestines and stomach which will result in constipation. Meanwhile, damage of the nerves that supply the urinary tract can lead to difficulty urinating.

The autonomic nervous system controls the muscles located in the blood vessel walls, controlling blood pressure. When these nerves are harmed, the blood pressure will not be properly regulated which may lead to orthostatic hypotension.

Dysfunctions of Muscles
When a person’s motor nerves are impaired, it can decrease the functionality of muscles that get impulses from the nerves. Medical specialists say that this condition manifests as muscle spasms, weakness and involuntary contractions. When a person who abuses alcohol has these symptoms, he may not be able to do normal movements every day. Loss of muscle function is likely to result in speech impediments and difficulty swallowing. When an individual is afflicted with alcoholic neuropathy for a long period of time, he may acquire muscle atrophy.

Available Treatments
Curing alcoholic neuropathy starts with finding medical help from specialists and addressing the alcohol issue. The treatment may include medications and vitamin supplementation to alleviate discomforts and pain.

Alcoholic neuropathy that is left untreated may have serious complications that can be fatal. It is important to minimize the risk of these complications by following a treatment plan that can be given by a medical professional.

HOMOEOPATHIC REMEDIES FOR LARYNGITIS

Laryngitis is an inflammation of your voice box (larynx) from overuse, irritation or infection.
Inside the larynx are your vocal cords — two folds of mucous membrane covering muscle and cartilage. Normally, your vocal cords open and close smoothly, forming sounds through their movement and vibration.
But in laryngitis, your vocal cords become inflamed or irritated. This swelling causes distortion of the sounds produced by air passing over them. As a result, your voice sounds hoarse. In some cases of laryngitis, your voice can become almost undetectable.
Laryngitis may be short-lived (acute) or long lasting (chronic). Most cases of laryngitis are triggered by a temporary viral infection or vocal strain and aren't serious. Persistent hoarseness can sometimes signal a more serious underlying medical condition.
Causes --Most cases of laryngitis are temporary and improve after the underlying cause gets better. Causes of acute laryngitis include:-Viral infections similar to those that cause a cold, Vocal strain, caused by yelling or overusing your voice, Bacterial infections, such as diphtheria, although this is rare, in large part due to increasing rates of vaccination
Chronic laryngitis
Laryngitis that lasts longer than three weeks is known as chronic laryngitis. This type of laryngitis is generally caused by exposure to irritants over time. Chronic laryngitis can cause vocal cord strain and injuries or growths on the vocal cords (polyps or nodules). These injuries can be caused by:-Inhaled irritants, such as chemical fumes, allergens or smoke, Acid reflux, also called gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD), Chronic sinusitis, Excessive alcohol use, Habitual overuse of your voice (such as with singers or cheerleaders), Smoking
Less common causes of chronic laryngitis include:-Bacterial or fungal infections, Infections with certain parasites
Other causes of chronic hoarseness include:-Cancer, Vocal cord paralysis, which can result from injury, stroke, a lung tumor or other health conditions,
Bowing of the vocal cords in old age
Symptoms -n most cases laryngitis symptoms last less than a couple of weeks and are caused by something minor, such as a virus. Less often, laryngitis symptoms are caused by something more serious or long lasting. Laryngitis signs and symptoms can include:-Hoarseness, Weak voice or voice lossTickling sensation and rawness of your throat, Sore throat, Dry throat, Dry cough

Day To Day Living With Neuropathy

Today's post comes from footpaincenter.com (see link below) and gives some advice as to how cope with neuropathy on a daily basis. Some people may grind their teeth at the idea of yet another self-help, or positive-thinking article:- positive thinking and neuropathy aren't always a good match. However, there is nothing wrong with the advice given here and many points may well be useful to you. It's sometimes difficult to be optimistic about neuropathic symptoms but maybe we have to at least keep trying!

Living with Neuropathy-Some Helpful Suggestions
Posted on
September 13, 2012 by admin

Neuropathy ranks highly as one of the most frustrating medical conditions. The symptoms can be vague and difficult to articulate to your physician. Many of my patients present with contradictory symptoms-often stating that they have both pain and numbness; and in most cases there are few if any physical signs and symptoms. That is to say no matter how bad symptoms manifest (usually in burning, tingling or pins and needles sensation), in most instances there are no physical changes such as swelling, or discoloration.

It’s especially frustrating when family, friends, and even your doctor tell you that you should be feeling better, you’re not trying hard enough, or that you’re just a complainer. You’re exhausted and hurting—you just want to feel better.

Here are some simple guidelines on how to live and cope with neuropathy:

Make yourself your #1 priority-it’s like the admonition that hear airplane flights: In an emergency first secure your own safety and then you can tend to others./

Many people “feel guilty” doing this, but it’s selfish not to. The better you feel, the better you are able to be with those around you. So ask yourself, what makes me feel better, happier and more content with my life? Then make sure to schedule time for what you need every day. Quiet time is a must—meditation, prayer, taking a walk, or reading. Think of activities you might be able to manage, even on your worst days. Is it a bubble bath, looking at magazines, getting a massage? Take care of your emotional needs, too. Surround yourself with positive, supportive people as much as possible.

Accept where you are right now and whatever feelings you may have. Do not fight against your situation or your feelings. Accepting things as they are can bring a feeling of peace. Identify where you are in this moment and how it feels. Just as someone on a diet needs to know his or her starting point, it’s important to pay attention to your starting point each day.

Set reachable, realistic goals. Focus on what you can do now and celebrate every small accomplishment.

Pace yourself! Resist the temptation to overdo on a good day. That can start a downward cycle. By pacing yourself, you will gradually increase your good days and begin to feel “more normal.” You’ll start to develop stability.

Use positive self-talk frequently throughout your day. Tell yourself what a good job you are doing. Don’t hold back. Your emotional well-being and state-of-mind have a profound impact on your energy and pain. Lift yourself up.Think through what is really important. Focus on what makes you feel better. If you are involved in activities or situations that make you feel worse, try to avoid them. If you can’t stop right away, work to limit your involvement, and make a plan to stop. You are your own best advocate.

Be empowered. This is your life. Talk to someone who understands about your goals. Write out questions and get information. Keep a file on yourself. Ask for help from others when needed. Join organizations to advocate with others. Face your fears. Stay open to all possibilities, but trust your own judgment. Do what you feel is best for you.

Decide what is right and good for you. Replenish before giving. Take responsibility for meeting your own needs, emotionally, physically and spiritually. Do not feel guilty for needing help, or taking time for yoga, massage, or gentle stretching. What may seem like pampering may be what is needed to feel your best. If others don’t understand, that is their issue, not yours.

Just implementing one or two of these steps consistently can have a positive, profound effect.

Believe your pain, health, and your life can be better. It doesn’t happen overnight—take good care of YOU and practice these positive steps. It will make a difference. Your emotional pain is as real any other kind of pain. How you live with it is something you have control over. Start small. Don’t worry about your progress or speed; just keep moving in the right direction. It starts with one step, and you are not alone.

The Neuropathy Carer

It's so easy to forget that you're not the only one experiencing an illness. Family, friends and especially loved ones, are often the unsung heroes in the lives of neuropathy patients but these are relationships which can sometimes be unwittingly abused and lead to unnecessary stresses. Either the patient becomes too demanding, or the carer becomes fed up, or too worn down to carry on, or other people assume that because one person is taking most of the load, they don't need to offer support themselves. These are all understandable and mostly just human nature but everyone involved with neuropathy in the 'family', including the patient, needs to occasionally spare a thought for the carers, who after all, never asked to be given the role.
This article from gmfa.org.uk (see link below) highlights the problem and reminds us what sort of pressure such a disease can bring. It's a situation already well-known to people who have HIV-partners who are, or have been ill. It hardly seems fair that yet another disease is ruining some of our lives.

Your partner as carer

It’s not uncommon for partners of HIV positive men (or women ed.) to assume the role of primary carer in situations where the HIV positive man (or woman ed.) is experiencing problems with his (or her ed.) health.

Having your partner become your primary carer can be highly stressful for both of you. Emotionally it is likely to be hard for your partner to cope with seeing the person he loves in poor health, and switching between the roles of lover and carer may prove difficult for him.

He may have fears about your future which he doesn’t feel he can discuss with you. In this situation it’s important that he finds someone to talk to, maybe a close friend, so he gets the chance to release any bottled up emotions and fears about your situation.

If you are in poor health, having to rely on your partner can cause feelings of anger about losing some of your independence, and guilt for having to lean on him so much. Often in situations where one partner is also primary carer, both will have worries that aren’t discussed. There is support available for you and your partner if you are in this situation, but being honest and open with each other, or even with a close friend, about how you feel will help you to better cope with the stressful times.

"My partner hasn’t been well for a long time. He has severe pains in his hands and feet caused by peripheral neuropathy and this makes it difficult for him to get about or do much for himself at least half of the time. This has meant that I’ve found myself in the role of his primary carer when he’s in pain. Although I’m kind of used to it now it hasn’t been easy, and sometimes it isn’t still. As well as working full time I also do most of the shopping, cooking and cleaning so I don’t get much time to relax each day. This on top of watching the man I love in distress most days is very hard, and sometimes I really do struggle to cope. Having said all this, we do manage to get by, and despite everything we have been and are going through we are very happy together. However, I can’t tell him how much it affects me when I’m finding it hard going – I just couldn’t pile up that guilt on him when he’s already in pain. I have a lot of close friends who I can offload to and they give me the support I need when I ask, and without them I don’t know how I’d cope. (Adrian, 37)"
http://www.gmfa.org.uk/positive/relationships/your-relationship

If you do feel that you or your partner needs some help dealing with your situation either physical, financial or emotional, then you’ll need to find information about the support available, from your home doctor, your HIV specialist or your local HIV organisation. Failing that, the internet is of course a possible option. Whatever happens, don't suffer alone and don't put it off until it is too late. If it's getting to be too much for you or your partner, don't hesitate to ask for help. Avoiding a situation where neuropathy can ruin your relationship permanently, is of paramount importance and somebody somewhere should be able to share your burden.

HOMOEOPATHIC REMEDIES FOR FOOD ALLERGY

Food allergy is an immune system reaction that occurs soon after eating a certain food. Even a tiny amount of the allergy-causing food can trigger signs and symptoms such as digestive problems, hives or swollen airways. In some people, a food allergy can cause severe symptoms or even a life-threatening reaction known as anaphylaxis.
Food allergy affects an estimated 6 to 8 percent of children under age 3 and up to 3 percent of adults. While there's no cure, some children outgrow their food allergy as they get older.
It's easy to confuse a food allergy with a much more common reaction known as food intolerance. While bothersome, food intolerance is a less serious condition that does not involve the immune system
Causes-When you have a food allergy, your immune system mistakenly identifies a specific food or a substance in food as something harmful. Your immune system triggers cells to release antibodies known as immunoglobulin E (IgE) antibodies to neutralize the culprit food or food substance (the allergen). The next time you eat even the smallest amount of that food, the IgE antibodies sense it and signal your immune system to release a chemical called histamine, as well as other chemicals, into your bloodstream.
These chemicals cause a range of allergy signs and symptoms. They are responsible for causing allergic responses that include dripping nose, itchy eyes, dry throat, rashes and hives, nausea, diarrhea, labored breathing, and even anaphylactic shock.
The majority of food allergies are triggered by certain proteins in:
·         Shellfish, such as shrimp, lobster and crab
·         Peanuts
·         Tree nuts, such as walnuts and pecans
·         Fish
·         Eggs
In children, food allergies are commonly triggered by proteins in:
·         Eggs
·         Milk
·         Peanuts
·         Tree nuts
·         Wheat
Food intolerance and other reactions
There are a number of reactions to food that cause similar symptoms to a food allergy. Depending on the type of food intolerance you have, you may be able to eat small amounts of problem foods without a reaction. By contrast, if you have a true food allergy, even a tiny amount of food may trigger an allergic reaction.
Because a food intolerance may involve some of the same signs and symptoms as a food allergy does — such as nausea, vomiting, cramping and diarrhea — people may confuse the two.
One of the tricky aspects of diagnosing food intolerance is that some people are sensitive not to the food itself but to a substance or ingredient used in the preparation of the food
Common conditions that can cause symptoms mistaken for a food allergy include:
Absence of an enzyme needed to fully digest a food. You may not have adequate amounts of some enzymes needed to digest certain foods. Insufficient quantities of the enzyme lactase, for example, reduce your ability to digest lactose, the main sugar in milk products. Lactose intolerance can cause bloating, cramping, diarrhea and excess gas.
Food poisoning. Sometimes food poisoning can mimic an allergic reaction. Bacteria in spoiled tuna and other fish also can make a toxin that triggers harmful reactions.
Sensitivity to food additives. Some people have digestive reactions and other symptoms after eating certain food additives. For example, sulfites used to preserve dried fruit, canned goods and wine can trigger asthma attacks in sensitive people. Other food additives that could trigger severe reactions include monosodium glutamate (MSG), artificial sweeteners and food colorings.

Histamine toxicity. Certain fish, such as tuna or mackerel, that are not refrigerated properly and that contain high amounts of bacteria may contain high levels of histamine that trigger symptoms similar to those of food allergy. Rather than an allergic reaction, this is known as histamine toxicity or scombroid poisoning.
Celiac disease. While celiac disease is sometimes referred to as a gluten allergy, it isn't a true food allergy. Like a food allergy, it does involve an immune system response, but it's a unique immune system reaction that's more complex than a simple food allergy. This chronic digestive condition is triggered by eating gluten, a protein found in bread, pasta, cookies, and many other foods containing wheat, barley or rye.
If you have celiac disease and eat foods containing gluten, an immune reaction occurs that causes damage to the surface of your small intestine, leading to an inability to absorb certain nutrients.
Symptoms-For some people, an allergic reaction to a particular food may be uncomfortable but not severe. For other people, an allergic food reaction can be frightening and even life-threatening. Food allergy symptoms usually develop within a few minutes to two hours after eating the offending food.
The most common food allergy signs and symptoms include:
·         Tingling or itching in the mouth
·         Hives, itching or eczema
·         Swelling of the lips, face, tongue and throat or other parts of the body
·         Wheezing, nasal congestion or trouble breathing
·         Abdominal pain, diarrhea, nausea or vomiting
·         Dizziness, lightheadedness or fainting
Anaphylaxis
In some people, a food allergy can trigger a severe allergic reaction called anaphylaxis. This can cause life-threatening signs and symptoms, including:
·         Constriction and tightening of airways
·         A swollen throat or the sensation of a lump in your throat that makes it difficult to breathe
·         Shock with a severe drop in blood pressure
·         Rapid pulse
·         Dizziness, lightheadedness or loss of consciousness
Emergency treatment is critical for anaphylaxis. Untreated, anaphylaxis can cause a coma or even death.
Exercise-induced food allergy
Some people have an allergic reaction to a food triggered by exercise. Eating certain foods may cause you to feel itchy and lightheaded soon after you start exercising. In serious cases, an exercise-induced food allergy can cause certain reactions such as hives or anaphylaxis.
Not eating for a couple of hours before exercising and avoiding certain foods may help prevent this problem.
Pollen-food allergy syndrome
In many people who have hay fever, fresh fruits and vegetables and certain nuts and spices can trigger an allergic reaction that causes the mouth to tingle or itch. In some people, pollen-food allergy syndrome — sometimes called oral allergy syndrome — can cause swelling of the throat or even anaphylaxis.
This is an example of cross-reactivity. Proteins in fruits and vegetables cause the reaction because they're similar to those allergy-causing proteins found in certain pollens. For example, if you're allergic to ragweed, you may also react to melons; if you're allergic to birch pollen, you may also react to apples.
Cooking fruits and vegetables can help you avoid this reaction. Most cooked fruits and vegetables generally don't cause cross-reactive oral allergy symptoms.
Common cross-reactivity between pollens and fruits and vegetables:
Risk factors--Food allergy risk factors include:
Family history. You're at increased risk of food allergies if asthma, eczema, hives or allergies such as hay fever are common in your family.
A past food allergy. Children may outgrow a food allergy, but in some cases it returns later in life.
Other allergies. If you're already allergic to one food, you may be at increased risk of becoming allergic to another. Likewise, if you have other types of allergic reactions, such as hay fever or eczema, your risk of having a food allergy is greater.
Age. Food allergies are most common in children, especially toddlers and infants. As you grow older, your digestive system matures and your body is less likely to absorb food or food components that trigger allergies. Fortunately, children typically outgrow allergies to milk, soy, wheat and eggs. Severe allergies and allergies to nuts and shellfish are more likely to be lifelong.
Asthma. Asthma and food allergy commonly occur together. When they do, both food allergy and asthma symptoms are more likely to be severe.

Factors that may increase your risk of developing an anaphylactic reaction include:
·         Having a history of asthma

·         Being a teenager or younger
·         Waiting longer to use epinephrine to treat your food allergy symptoms
·         Not having hives or other skin symptoms
