COOLING OF DIALYSIS PROTECTS AGAINST BRAIN DAMAGE

While dialysis can cause blood pressure changes that damage the brain, cooling dialysis fluids can protect against such effects. The findings come from a study appearing in an upcoming issue of theJournal of the American Society of Nephrology (JASN). The cooling intervention can be delivered without additional cost and is simple to perform

While dialysis is an essential treatment for many patients with kidney disease, it can cause damage to multiple organs, including the brain and heart, due to the sudden removal of bodily fluids.

To characterize dialysis-induced brain injury and to see whether cooled dialysis fluids (called dialysate) might help reduce such injury, Christopher McIntyre, DM, and his colleagues randomized 73 new dialysis patients to dialyze with body temperature dialysate or dialysate cooled to 0.5◦C below body temperature for 1 year. (Dr. McIntyre was at the University of Nottingham in the UK while conducting this work but is now at the University of Western Ontario and the London Health Sciences Centre, in Canada.)
The study demonstrated that dialysis drives progressive white matter brain injury due to blood pressure instability; however, patients who dialyzed at 0.5◦C below body temperature were completely protected against such white matter changes.

"This study demonstrates that paying attention to improving the tolerability of dialysis treatment -- in this case by the simple and safe intervention of reducing the temperature of dialysate -- does not just make patients feel better, but also can completely protect the brain from progressive damage," said Dr. McIntyre.

Two Videos About Neuropathy Medical Cannabis And HIV Vid

Today's two YouTube videos presented by Dr. Donald Abrams, are pretty much a follow-up to yesterday's post and are directed at people living with both HIV and neuropathy. They set about justifying the use of medical marijuana to relieve nerve pain. The first video concentrates on Dr Abram's experiences of medical cannabis and HIV/Aids wasting syndrome and serves more as a background to the Part Two video. The second video, talks about how he discovered the benefits of cannabis for people living with both HIV and neuropathy.
The transcripts are shown below each video.

There are patients able to overcome their nausea and vomiting from their chemotherapy and perhaps even be cured of these malignancies by using cannabis. But what really started me in my research was in my work with HIV AIDS patients. Again seeing them being eaten alive if you will by the AIDS wasting syndrome, which was a common sort of end of life phenomenon that we had before we discovered effective anti retroviral drugs and about the time Delta-9 THC was approved, thats the drug durnabinol or marinol, for treatment for this wasting syndrome in HIV patients. We began to hear from these patients that they actually preferred smoking the cannabis because of their ability to titrate the effect better than swallowing a pill. We know now that cannabis taken by mouth either as baked product or the medication Delta-9 THC has much different absorbs ion and kinetics. It takes a much longer time to reach a much lower peak and then it stays in the system for quite a while. Whereas when it is inhaled, either smoked or vaporized, the peak plasma concentration is actually reached in about 2 minutes and then falls over the next 30 minutes. So the effect happens more rapidly and perhaps dissipates more rapidly. When taken by mouth, the Delta-9 THC, then main psychoactive component is metabolized in the liver to a 11 hydroxy form that is also psychoactive. So when eaten as either a baked product or as the pill the Delta-9 THC creates this psychoactive metabolite that makes people have even more of a psychoactive effect that when it is smoked. And for many patients this is unpleasant. So in 1992 I was challenged, if I may, to study smoked marijuana in patients with the Aids wasting syndrome and to compare it to marinol or durabinol which had been just approved for that indication. And that began a bit of a sort of struggle with our government to be able to conduct a clinical trial. But ultimately after a number of years we did get a million dollars and 1400 government cannabis cigarettes to do a clinical trial. It wasnt any more in patients with the AIDS wasting syndrome, because by this time we had effective anti-retroviral drugs and that syndrome had disappeared. And with the national institute on drug abuse they have actually a congressional mandate that they can only study substances of abuse as substances of abuse. So they were never going to allow me or to give me marijuana to study as a possible therapeutic agent. The study I ultimately got funded for was to study whether or not it was safe. For patients with HIV on the new potent anti-retroviral regimes to use cannabis. Because there had been a report in the literature of a patient using ecstasy or MDMA and dying from an overdose of ecstasy when taken with these antiviral drugs. So the question I posed and the government allowed me investigate, was is it safe for patients on the anti-retroviral drugs to smoke cannabis or to take the cannabis pill while they were taking the protease inhibitors.

So we did that study, and we showed that there was no damage to the level of the aids drug in the blood stream to the patients immune system or to the level of the virus in their blood stream over 21 days of smoking a government cigarette 3 times a day. And that led us then to move on and do other research looking to see if whether or not cannabis had any medicinal benefit for patients with HIV. Particularly we were fortunate in California when we had a budget surplus that one of our state senators established a center for medicinal cannabis research at the university of California. And that center worked out a deal with NIDA so that NIDA the only legal source of marijuana for research in the country would supply investigators who had been favorably peer reviewed by the University of California Center for Medicinal Cannabis Research to do clinical trials looking at the effectiveness of smoked marijuana. So I submitted a study to look at marijuana in patients with the painful HIV related peripheral neuropathy, which is the damage to the nerves in the hands and feet. For which we really didnt have any treatment. Opioid analgesics dont work well. We tried acupuncture. Most people use anti seizure medications. And these also could interact with the levels of the aids drugs. So we proposed a study to see if smoked cannabis could alleviate the pain of this peripheral neuropathy and ultimately we wound up doing a placebo-controlled trial where 25 patients smoked real cannabis from the government and 25 smoked cannabis that had the active ingredient had been extracted. And we showed the group that smoking the real cannabis had a decrease not only in their peripheral neuropathy pain in an experimental pain that we created in the patients by heating their skin to 104 degrees and then applying caparison cream on top of their skin. So that study funded by the Center for Medicinal Cannabis Research actually was the one of the first modern studies to be done that showed in a randomized placebo control fashion that cannabis does have a medicinal use and that is for treatment of HIV related peripheral neuropathy. And when we looked at our results the effectiveness of cannabis in that situation is comparable to the effectiveness of the drug that is most commonly used the anti seizure medications. Now do I think the government will change cannabiss schedule 1 classification which means it has no accepted medical use, on the basis of a study of 25 patients smoking cannabis and 25 smoking placebo. No, I think I have been around long enough to know thats not gonna do it.

Gout

Gout – a very small, acute affection of joint causing very big pain. Motion is life, as
earth do — Being immovable is more painful than any other.
Gout makes anyone disabled by crippling or locking the joints with its deposits. Arthritis is inflammation & pain in joints, which restricts movements. It is one of the most common sufferings, where the sufferers are made to live with pain throughout the life. Arthritis may be due to wear & tear mechanism, in case of age or due to deterioration of the cartilage pads or cartilage tear or formation of spurs or loss of lubricating fluids or muscle stiffness.
Every one likes to go on Life Miles, with Smiles towards ageing. But the major fear of life track. for aged persons is disability. Gout is one of that kind, which affects joints and mind i.e. a type of arthritis which affects persons of age below 50. It is mainly due to increased uric acid level in the body. Even though Gout seems to affect small joints, its pain is intolerable.
Gouty arthritis shares 7-9% of total arthritis cases.
Gout – is a metabolic, degenerative & crystal (monosodium urate) depositing disease of joints & connective tissues. It is also called as Rich man’s disease or King’s disease. It is one of the oldest diseases in the medical world. All the way, we learnt, man gets deviated from nature & gets diseases, whereas gout has been identified in older days itself, i.e. from the age of fruits or kings, where fruits are the major natural staple foods for man. The organic acids in the fruits, forms alkaline carbonates for alkalization of the body. Our body’s normal PH is 6.5-7.2. Many Nutritionists says that our food should be more alkaline than acidic. When our body becomes acidic- arthritis, stiffness, headaches, depression, ulcer stomach, sores, may occur. For that, alkaline foods like vegetables, juices & raw fruits should be taken which helps in eliminating toxic wastages.

Incidence

  • Males are more predominantly affected than females.
  • Usually 30-50 age group is more commonly affected
  • Mostly people of “O” blood group and hypertension have increased incidence.
  • Gout more commonly occurs in people who have elevated serum uric acid levels
  • Start up usually follows unusually heavy diet or citrus fruits or its juices or alcohol or drugs or starvation
  • Even though complaints get aggravated, due to stiffness in cool climates, it attacks mostly in hot climates.
Pathology & Progress of the Gout – Uric acid is a waste end product of body metabolism, which occurs naturally. Uric acid results from the breakdown of purines, a compound that is found mostly in animal origin foods and human tissues. It is normally eliminated by kidneys through urine. If it is not eliminated properly, due to renal damage or excess production, it precipitates to form crystals and get deposited in the joints and connective tissues. These deposits can cause injury or abrasions and give rise to inflammation of the joints, causing pain, swelling, redness and tenderness.
The initial attack mostly occurs in one joint which will be for a week or more. It will mostly respond to anti-inflammatory type of medicines. Later after a silent period, it again rebounds within a year or more, but with more potential. This time it won’t respond easily to anti-inflammatory type of medicines. Even if it responds, it won’t go away completely. In due course, flare up occurs in more joints, most frequently and more violently, making the joint distorted and making the patient disabled.
Causes – The ultimate cause is unknown. The Main triggers are
  • Familial – genetic predisposition
  • Over weight – excess fat increases uric acid production
  • Foods rich in purines- liver, kidney, sea foods, alcohol.
  • Starvation or fasting- reduction in calories may precipitate the gout
  • Multivitamins therapy especially when containing niacin
  • Drugs- diuretics, hypertensive drugs, anti inflammatory drugs, chemo therapy.
  • Trauma
  • Stress
The rise in uric acid may be due to increased production or decreased elimination. The conditions mostly accompanied with are
  • Increased uric acid level due to elimination defects — Renal failure, Drugs, Hyperparathyroidism, Down’s syndrome
  • Increased uric acid level due to increased production of uric acids – Food, alcohol, obesity, diabetes, heart diseases, psoriasis, polycythemia, leukemias.
Types of Gout – Gout is classified mainly as primary or secondary gout
Primary Gout – where no other cause can be identified. Mostly this type are genetic.
Secondary gout – which may be due to high levels of uric acid, from over production as in case of foods, alcohol, psoriasis, obesity, diabetes.or reduced elimination of uric acid due to kidney damage. In relation to its intensity and period, gout can be further classified as
Acute gout – it is a very active stage of disease, where hyperuricemia causes deposits of uric acid crystals, in joint spaces which lead to sudden onset of intense pain and swelling in the joints. It commonly affects the first metatarsal joint of the foot, but other joints can also be commonly involved.
Chronic gout – As disease becomes older, the uric acid crystals deposited inside the joint and in the surrounding soft tissues, lead to destructive changes in the joint and cause persistent inflammation. Uric acid crystals deposited in soft tissues are known as ‘tophi.’ These appear as yellowish deposits under the skin, commonly occur in the fingers or toes, behind the heels or elbows, edges of the ears, etc. They can also form deposits in the kidney or urinary tract causing renal stones, in long course of time. With proper treatment, the disease won’t progress to this advanced stage.
Symptoms of Gout – Initial symptom of pain is usually followed by swelling, stiffness & restriction of movements. There are two set of symptoms. They are

Pre deposit symptoms

  • The start up pain usually subsides within a month and recurs in short or long time.
  • Usually it gets started as acute and severe pain in toes and fingers
  • Complaints starts mostly in single joint (great toe) but can occur in one or more joints
  • Other common sites are knee, ankle and small joints of feet, hands, wrist & elbow. But the joints of the lower limbs have greater incidence than the upper limbs
  • The inflamed joint is very painful, red, swollen, shiny and hot with dilated veins
  • The inflamed joint cannot be moved or touched.
  • Mostly aggravated in night
  • It may be accompanied with fever with chills, raised ESR, leucocytosis, etc., complaints recurs on weeks or months intervals, weakness, fatigue, spasms.
  • Sleeplessness

Post deposit symptoms or Complications

  • Persistent inflammation or recurrent attacks will produce degenerative changes, bony erosions, cartilage damage, deposition of monosodium bicarbonate crystals (chalky crystals –named Tophi) in joints, making the joint distorted or damaged, which are all, on the way to deformities and disability
  • Crystals can get deposited in cartilage of ear, soft tissues & tendon sheath
  • Renal stones and renal failure
  • Eczema in the gouty joints or crystal deposited areas
Diagnosis & Investigations – It is better to evaluate the disease, with the history of complaints, physical examination and laboratory investigations to treat the disease, in initial period itself, since every disease responds very well in initial period. The main diagnostic tools in confirming the Gout are
  • Blood tests for elevated serum uric acid level will mostly disclose the presence of elevated level in case of gout, but it is not confirmative, since there are lots of people who have this elevated level, without any symptoms. Like wise, even though it is mostly elevated in gout, there are exceptional cases where it seems to be very normal.
  • The most confirmative diagnose is examination of synovial fluid (lubricating fluid of the joints)     * Trace for needle shape uric acid crystals in synovial fluid
    * For the presence of bacteria in synovial fluid
  • In advanced cases, X-ray may show joint distortion, with crystal deposition like crippling or spurs or erosions

Preventive measures
– Prevention is the best defense against gout and its complications.
Avoid
  • Alcohol – it increases the uric acid level, by acting as a diuretic.
  • Weight loss or starvation – increases the uric acid level, due to lactic acidosis
  • Foods rich in purines- meat, liver, brain, kidney, cod liver oil, yeast, bread, sauces, beans, nuts and peas
  • Acid foods- proteins-beans, dairy, fats, poultry, cooked grains, synthetic vitamins
  • Diets which have rich fat content
  • Fructose- i.e. fruit juices which increase uric acid level
  • Drugs- Hypertensive drugs, diuretics.
  • Overusing the joints during pain
Take
  • Foods which can be easily digested and eliminated
  • Apples, bananas, mango, cucumber, garlic which often seems to give betterment
  • Low purine diet such as fruits, breads, grains, cheese, eggs, milk products, sugar, spinach, green stuff vegetables, salads.
  • Folic acid, Vit C sometimes helps in uric acid elimination. In some cases, it flares up the condition even with a small piece of lemon or tomato.
  • Cherry and strawberry to neutralize the uric acid level
DOs

  • Drink plenty of water
  • Slow movement or slow exercise to avoid fixation or immobility.
  • Warm up the muscles with exercise
  • Rest and elevation for the part inflammed
  • Slowly increase habit of taking fruits since some cases & theories show that fresh and ripe grapes, oranges & sour fruits cure the condition after a flare up.
Treatment – Generally, Allopathy concentrates on the spot, and mostly treats the inflammatory conditions and manages the situation. For centuries, the treatment was related with diet. Some doctors ask the patients, to avoid fruits, and some other asks to take in plenty. Some doctors frame the life style with less stress, changing the diuretics drugs & drugs for hypertension with caution. The most commonly used drugs like anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) or Corticosteroids taken orally or in the form of injection into the affected joint, usually benumb the pain i.e. these drugs kill only the pain, but the production of the uric acid or its eliminating defect in the body is not at all interrupted or altered. If this condition is left untreated, affected joints may get damaged permanently, causing disability. In most cases, gout does not get treated properly, unless it occurs frequently and hurts much. Also, Pain killers cannot be taken by peptic ulcer patients. Sometimes these drugs itself can stir up the gouty condition.
Homeopathic Approach – Treatment should be aimed at reducing serum urate level & its deposits than killing the pain. Pain is the indicator of presence of inflammation or uric acid crystals. If we put off the pain, we cannot judge the proceedings & presence of the disease. Even though the effect is seen only in great toe, it affects body wholly (its impact can be seen in other joints, kidneys, soft tissues, tendon sheaths & skin). Thus for cure, the disease must be treated, completely in a holistic manner internally, rather than with pain killers or applications which mask the complaints by causing a benumbing sensation Gout causes pain in many places. So it is more important to correct uric acid level i.e. hyperuricaemia, not just relieving the pain or its effects on the joints.
A piece of pickle or a sip of lime juice or a gulp of tomato soup can precipitate the condition like oil poured on fire. With mountain of difficulty, patients take precautions about food and restrict one by one and later correlate every thing with pain. Supplementation and restriction can work only for the time being.
The ultimate cause is UNKNOWN. So you cannot attack the enemy who is hiding. We should get strengthened, to withstand the situation or condition. Homeopathy protects us, by raising our body immunity. Homeopathy can also surely bring dramatic effects of cure, since it treats wholly.
Success of the treatment mainly depends upon the early diagnosis & early treatment. Since later on structural damage will occur with deposits. Usually functional damages can be corrected fully, whereas structural changes cannot be cured completely, & can only be managed. So, it is better to treat Gout on initial attack itself, otherwise it will take much time to eliminate it, from its root. The symptoms of gout usually wax and wane. Improvement on homeopathy treatment will be in a slow manner. Have patience, to get relief or be a life-long patient. So, for a safer & long-time protection, opt for homeopathy. Homeopathy shall provide complete cure for gout.
The results of homoeopathy treatment through my experiences in gout cases are far superior, to usual way of treatment with other system of medicines. The homeopathic medicines commonly used in cases of Gout are Aconite, Benzoic acid, Belladonna, Beri beri vul, Bryonia, Causticum, Cimicifuga, Colchicum, Kalmia, Ledum, Lithium carb, Lycopodium, Phosphorus, Rhus tox, Tarentula, Pulsatilla Urtica urens. These medicines should be taken under the advice and diagnosis of a Qualified Homoeopath.

PARALYSED MAN WALKS AGAIN AFTER CELL TRANSPLANTATION FROM HIS NOSE

In a pioneering therapy, doctors in Poland, in collaboration with scientists in London, have performed cell transplantation of a paralysed man who can now walk using cells from his nose.
The 38-year-old Bulgarian man, Darek Fidyka, was paralysed from the waist down after being stabbed in 2010.
The transplant involves a procedure of transplanting olfactory ensheathing cells, where the sense of smell resides, into the patient`s spinal cord. The doctors removed one of his olfactory bulbs and transplanted his own olfactory ensheathing cells (OECs) and olfactory nerve fibroblasts (ONFs) into the damaged area along with a nerve "bridge" constructed between the two stumps of the damage spinal column.
OECs are a type of cells that reside in both the peripheral and central nervous system. Together with ONFs, they make bundles of nerve fibers that run from the nasal mucosa to the olfactory bulb where the sense of smell is located. The technique of bridging the sectional spinal cord using autologous (derived from the patient) sural nerve grafts has been used in animal studies for three decades, but never in combination with OECs, commented the doctors.
The study is due to be published in Cell Transplantation.

FRIENDS KNOW HOW LONG YOU WILL LIVE

Young lovers walking down the aisle may dream of long and healthy lives together, but close friends in the wedding party may have a better sense of whether those wishes will come true, suggests new research on personality and longevity from Washington University in St. Louis.
You expect your friends to be inclined to see you in a positive manner, but they also are keen observers of the personality traits that could send you to an early grave," said Joshua Jackson, PhD, assistant professor of psychology in Arts & Sciences.
Published Jan. 12 in an advance online issue of the journal Psychological Science, the study demonstrates that your personality at an early age (20s) can predict how long you will live across 75 years and that close friends are usually better than you at recognizing these traits.
Male participants seen by their friends as more open and conscientious ended up living longer. Female participants whose friends rated them as high on emotional stability and agreeableness also enjoyed longer lifespans, the study found.
"Our study shows that people are able to observe and rate a friend's personality accurately enough to predict early mortality decades down the road," Jackson said. "It suggests that people are able to see important characteristics related to health even when their friends were, for the most part, healthy and many years from death."
It's no secret that a person's personality traits can have an impact on health. Traits such as depression and anger have been linked to an increased risk of various diseases and health concerns, including an early death.
Men who are conscientious are more likely to eat right, stick with an exercise routine and avoid risks, such as driving without a seat belt. Women who are emotionally stable may be better at fighting off anger, anxiety and depression, Jackson suggests.
While other studies have shown that a person's view of his or her own personality can be helpful in gauging mortality risk, there has been little research on whether a close friend's personality assessment might also predict the odds of a long life.
To explore this question, Jackson and colleagues analyzed data from a longitudinal study that in the 1930s began following a group of young people in their mid-20s, most of whom were engaged to be married.
The longitudinal study included extensive data on participant personality traits, both self-reported and as reported by close friends, including bridesmaids and groomsmen in the study participants' wedding parties.
Using information from previous follow-up studies and searches of death certificates, Jackson and colleagues were able to document dates of death for all but a few study participants. Peer ratings of personality were stronger predictors of mortality risk than were self-ratings of personality.
"There are two potential reasons for the superiority of peer ratings over self ratings," Jackson said.
"First, friends may see something that you miss; they may have some insight that you do not. Second, because people have multiple friends, we are able to average the idiosyncrasies of any one friend to obtain a more reliable assessment of personality. With self reports, people may be biased or miss certain aspects of themselves and we are not able to counteract that because there is only one you, only one self-report."
The study also revealed some gender differences in self-assessment: Men's self-ratings of personality traits were somewhat useful in predicting their lifespans, whereas the self-reports of women had little predictive value.
Jackson suggests this gender difference in self-reporting may be a function of the era in which the study began, since societal expectations were different then and fewer women worked outside the home.
Young women seen as highly agreeable and emotionally stable may have increased odds for a long and happy life since their personalities were well suited for the role of a supportive and easy-going wife, which would have been the norm in the 1930s. It is likely that fewer gender differences would arise in more modern samples if we were able to wait 75 years to replicate the study, he said.
"This is one of the longest studies in psychology," Jackson said. "It shows how important personality is in influencing significant life outcomes like health and demonstrates that information from friends and other observers can play a critical role in understanding a person's health issues. For example, it suggests that family members and even physician ratings could be used to personalize medical treatments or identify who is at risk for certain health ailments."
The study is co-authored by James J. Connolly, PhD, and Madeleine M. Leveille, PhD, of Connolly Consulting, Waterford, Connecticut; S. Mason Garrison of the Department of Psychology and Human Development, Vanderbilt University; and Seamus L. Connolly of College of Medicine, Touro University, California.

Lasers May Be Able To Repair Damaged Nerve Sheaths

Today's post from diabetesqld.org (see link below) is an article from an Australian website that reports on what could be the next big thing regarding neuropathy treatment. I know...I can hear you sighing...after so many 'next big things' that turn out to be false dawns, we tend to view new findings with some skepticism don't we? However, the science behind this one seems to be solid and although many more studies are needed (as always), the idea that non-invasive laser treatment may be able to repair damaged myelin sheaths (insulation around the nerves) is a very attractive one. Also encouraging; the Brazilian lab admits it doesn't know why this seems to work but they have some theories that time will either prove or disprove. It may be a question from a dumb onlooker but precisely where do you apply the laser treatment? The very nature of peripheral neuropathy means that the damaged nerves can be very hard to pin down and identify. Just because the pain is in the feet or hands, doesn't mean that the damage is there also. I guess we'll just have to wait and see but this is one of those research discoveries you hope will turn out to be true and workable for us long-term sufferers.

Neuropathic pain? Science says lasers can help.
31 March 2017 /

Recent studies at the University of São Paulo's Biomedical Science Institute (ICB-USP) in Brazil shows low-level laser therapy to be a non-invasive and effective alternative for treating neuropathic pain, a chronic condition caused by nerve damage, spinal cord injury or diseases such as diabetes.

The treatment in a model of diabetic neuropathy, one of the most common chronic and incapacitating complications of diabetes, was tested. Neuropathic pain in diabetes occurs when the disease is not properly controlled and excessive amounts of blood sugar cause oxidation of the myelin sheath, damaging the structure of peripheral nerves. As well as causing pain, this degenerative process impairs communication among neurons and can even lead to amputation of the lower limbs.

"We tested laser therapy in different rat neuropathy models, and behavioral responses improved in all of them," Professor Marucia Chacur, the principal investigator, said. "One of the beneficial effects observed was myelin sheath recovery. The myelin sheath is a lipid layer that covers the axon and acts as electrical insulation to assist nerve impulse propagation."

With the aid of a transmission electron microscope, the researchers found that as diabetes progressed, the structure of the sciatic nerve's myelin sheath changed. After four sessions of the treatment, however, the myelin had almost completely recovered.

"The condition of the nerve practically returned to baseline levels after treatment. We're now continuing the study by analyzing protein expression and the release of inflammatory cytokines to understand exactly what's happening," Chacur said.

In a second study, treatment focused on the sciatic nerve, and found that astrocytes - star-shaped cells that play an active role in brain function and inflammatory responses - were the first type of cell to migrate to the site of a nerve injury or inflammatory process. These cells release several inflammatory mediators, which in turn trigger the release of other inflammatory substances.

"We believe the laser curtails this chain reaction as if it were anti-inflammatory medication, by reducing the migration of astrocytes to the site of the injury," Chacur said.

The third model used to test low-level laser therapy focused on orofacial pain, involving the inferior alveolar nerve, one of the branches of the trigeminal nerve responsible for innervating the face. Phototherapy started two days after injury and improvement was observed after two sessions.

"We set out to understand the mechanisms and mediators involved because we believed phototherapy could be used in association with pharmacological treatment because it acts via a different pathway. In this way, it may be possible to reduce the drug dose and mitigate the systemic effects of the treatment," Chacur said.

The results suggest that all three models of neuropathic pain studied share a common mechanism involving myelin sheath regeneration and reduced astrocyte migration to the site of the lesion, she added.

"Evidence in the literature also suggests an effect on mitochondria. The laser apparently facilitates the flow of calcium in these organelles, boosting production of ATP [adenosine triphosphate, the body's cellular fuel] and leading to enhanced healing as well as the release of mediators that assist remodeling. In future studies, we plan to investigate this effect on mitochondria more thoroughly," Chacur concluded.
